Western Downs' Mayor commits to rehoming 1500 Syrians

MAYOR Ray Brown has committed the Western Downs region to rehoming up to 1500 Syrian asylum seekers.

After a week of behind-the-scenes investigations into the logistical constraints of the region, he said the Western Downs had, so far, ticked all the boxes.

"This isn't about building a future for the Western Downs, but for the displaced families… and I want the whole family," he said.

This is more than 12% of Prime Minister Tony Abbott's announcement of an extra 12,000 places for people fleeing Syria.

"I need the community with me on this. I'm looking for assimilation."

Cr Brown said the region, including Chinchilla, Miles, Tara and Wandoan could all receive asylum seekers.

"The beauty of this is that there are about 500 good quality rentals sprinkled across the region. The last thing I want is a fishbowl with people looking in."

He said it came down to the Federal Government to decide where the refugees would end up.

"We've put our hands up to say we can take them straight away."

Would you like to see 1500 Syrian asylum seekers in the Western Downs?
