3x limit drink driver crashes on hunt for more booze

A DRINK driver on the hunt for more booze has been busted at over three times the limit after he crashed into a traffic island.

Mitchell Luke Cheesman faced Maroochydore Magistrates Court this week, facing one charge of driving under the influence.

Police prosecutor Stephen Potter told the court that on May 30 at 4.15pm, police were tasked to attend Palkana Drive, Warana, after receiving reports of a vehicle that had hit a traffic island.

Upon arrival, police observed Cheesman on the footpath, standing beside the car, who admitted to driving it. The traffic sign on the island had been knocked over.

They also observed Cheesman had bloodshot eyes, smelt of alcohol and had slurred speech. He readily admitted that he had been at a friend's house nearby and had been drinking since noon.

Cheesman stated that he intended to drive to the local bottle shop and after being breathalysed, he returned a positive reading, with further tests at the police station revealing a reading of 0.153.

Cheesman's lawyer Ben Taylor told the court that he was an apprentice cabinet maker and was very remorseful for his actions.

"He made the stupid decision to drive and wasn't used to the lack of power steering of the vehicle as it belonged to his friend," he said.

The court heard Cheesman offered to pay the damages to his friend's car and was remorseful for his actions.

Magistrate Haydn Stjernqvist told Cheesman, who had no prior history, that this should be a wake-up call.

"Just fill me in, you're 0.153 and you're driving to the bottle shop?" he asked in disbelief.

"I can't think of anything right about this, except that you're alive to see your 20th birthday next Friday."

Cheesman was fined $900 and was disqualified from driving for nine months.
