$500 in 50 minutes: community pulls together for fisherman

JACKSON Muller's week may have hit a bump when his pride and joy blue esky was stolen on Wednesday, but the generosity of 45 strangers had the 23-year-old grinning again.

Jackson, who has autism, goes fishing every day, thanks to his dedicated mother, Barb, and carers.

He saved his pennies from his disability pension to buy the 60-litre esky, which had his name engraved on it, only to have it snatched on Wednesday when he turned his back for a few minutes.

Barb took to Facebook to track down the stolen esky, but got more than she bargained for.

Her post was shared on a number of local Facebook pages and she received offers from all over Central Queensland to chip in for a replacement esky.

Fellow avid fisherman Mitch O'Maley set up a Go Fund Me project on Thursday night, which reached its target of $500 in 50 minutes.

By lunchtime yesterday, $1355 had been donated.

"He just loves to throw a line out... or put a crab pot in," Barb said.

"(He) doesn't catch an awful lot of fish... but he brings home a crab now and then for me to cook up. He will sit for hours fishing, even if he doesn't catch anything.

"He has a lot of communication problems because of his autism but he knows exactly what fish is on his line even before he's pulled it up.

"His dad was a pro fisherman and his grandfather was Wally Muller who started the first fishing charter boat, the Coralita, back in 1969."

Mitch said the plan was to buy Jackson a new esky and with the leftover donations, more fishing gear.
