Don't clog hospitals with post-finals drinking

RUGBY league fans have been urged to take it easy on the drink this weekend, ahead of the all-Queensland NRL Grand Final.

With the Brisbane Broncos and North Queensland Cowboys set to battle for the league's crowning glory, the Queensland Emergency Medicine Research Foundation has warned drinkers to moderate their alcohol consumption.

Foundation spokesman Dr Jeremy Furyk said emergency departments around the country were bracing for a jump in alcohol-related injuries this weekend.

The Townsville doctor said tomorrow night was "definitely going to be a big one", especially given the public holiday on Monday.

Dr Furyk completed a 2012 study of the impact on State of Origin games on the health system in Queensland and New South Wales.

It found that although game days were usually quieter than other days, a "post-game spike" hit emergency departments in both states.
