PM's first night at the lodge after renovations finish

PRIME Minister Malcolm Turnbull and his wife Lucy spent their first night at The Lodge on the weekend after extensive renovations finally finished at the residence.

The Prime Minister's official Canberra residence has been unoccupied since 2013.

It was expected the original $3 million worth of renovations would be completed by about April 2014 but the work was only completed last month.

The new works are believed to have cost about $9 million and involved asbestos removal, roof replacement and work on plumbing and electrical wiring among other refurbishments.

Tony Abbott never spent a night at The Lodge, located in the suburb of Deakin.

The work was commissioned under the Gillard government and delays meant Mr Abbott never moved in.

It is understood Mr Turnbull could host several Australia Day functions at the house this week.
