Turnbull calls reports of raped refugees 'alarming'

PRIME Minister Malcolm Turnbull says reports of the rape of two refugees on Nauru are alarming and the government is committed to ensuring the safety of people in offshore processing centres.

On Radio National yesterday, Mr Turnbull said the government was taking steps to work closely with the Nauru government to "ensure the safety and the security of all the refugees living in that community".

"We fund the deployment of the AFP officers to support and mentor the Nauru police in their basic invest-igations and their policing," he said.

"Nauru's Government has recently established a gender, violence and child protection unit within their Department of Home Affairs."

Earlier this month the New Zealand Government suspended funding of $1.2 million to Nauru's judicial system over concerns about civil rights abuses.

NZ Foreign Minister Murray McCully cited access of asylum seekers to justice as "a concern of ours".
