Mysterious blood-stained car not reported stolen, cops say

UPDATE 4.20pm: A CAR found abandoned on its side with blood on the steering wheel was not stolen and is registered to a Northern Rivers resident, police have confirmed.

Details about the car or how it came to be abandoned outside the Masters Hardware store at South Lismore remain sketchy, but police have confirmed the vehicle is a gold-coloured Ford Falcon sedan.

Police have no reports of anyone being seen near the vehicle when or after it was abandoned on Thursday morning.

2.40pm: POLICE are appealing for information after an abandoned car with a blood stained steering wheel was found outside South Lismore's new Masters store on Thursday morning.

Lismore police inspector Matt Johnson said about 2am police were called by a security guard to the Masters store with reports a car was on its side.

Insp Johnson said when officers arrived they found the sedan on its side with blood on the steering wheel, the keys missing from the ignition and front-end damage, which appeared to be from a crash.

The sedan was towed away by police for forensic examination.
