Abandoned car torched on highway latest in spate of fires
AN ABANDONED car found burning off a remote stretch of highway early this morning is the latest is a spate of suspicious incidents across the weekend.
Queensland Fire and Emergency Services were called to reports a car was burning off the Gore Hwy at Captains Mountain about 2.10am.
There was no-one at the scene when emergency services arrived.
QFES crews were able to bring the blaze under control with a fire extinguisher while police arrived on scene a short time later.
The vehicle was towed and the incident will be investigated by police.
It is the second early morning car fire QFES crews have been called to across the weekend after a vehicle was destroyed near Pittsworth yesterday.
QFES crews were alerted to the fire about 1.35am at Scrubby Mountain south of Pittsworth.
The car was found abandoned and was destroyed in the fire which was "well-involved" on arrival, a QFES spokeswoman said.
It follows a car believed to have been set alight parked in a church car park in Toowoomba Friday night.
Witnesses report the vehicle had been parked outside the Rangeville Community Church at the corner of Mackenzie and Stenner Sts for a number of weeks.
It was set alight shortly before 7pm Friday and was destroyed.
Police are investigating.
