Armed robber hands himself in to face punishment

GREGORY Wayne Marks might only have been pretending to be armed when he robbed four Coast businesses but that did not do much to lighten his sentence.

Marks, 31, was in the grips of ice addiction when he robbed four businesses and unsuccessfully tried to rob another in late 2013 and early 2014.

He pretended to have a gun or knife when he made threats to staff such as "I will shoot you", "I will stab you" and "I will blow your brains out".

Police interviewed him about the robberies in March 2014 but did not have enough evidence at the time to charge him.

They did not get the required evidence until receiving tip-offs from friends of Marks a few months later.

By that time, he was living with his parents in South Australia.

Marks was arrested on another matter in South Australia on October 26, 2015, and after a visit from Queensland police officers, he agreed to come back.

His dad drove him up and he surrendered into custody on November 17, 2015.

Defence barrister Stephen Courtney told Maroochydore District Court on Monday that a relationship breakdown as well as a new job falling through after Marks had resigned from his old one had led to him being homeless.

He drank heavily and developed an ice addiction.

Judge John Robertson noted the efforts Marks had made to rehabilitate himself since going into custody.

He sentenced Marks to six years in jail.

Marks will be eligible for parole on October 1.
