Ashleigh Humphrys hit and run tragedy: driver found dead

THE driver of a car believed to have hit and killed 20-year-old former Sunshine Coast student Ashleigh Humphrys has been found dead.

Police seized the dark sedan on Monday afternoon and questioned the driver but released him without charge.

On Friday morning police confirmed the 57-year-old man had died on Thursday in non-suspicious circumstances, Fairfax reported.

Ms Humphrys died after being hit by a car near a roundabout at Toowong about 4am Sunday.

Her family has been informed of the latest developments.

Ashleigh was  struck by a car while walking home from her birthday celebrations in Brisbane. Her death is being felt here on the Sunshine Coast.

She had previously lived on the Coast and attended Talara Primary School.

Ashleigh was celebrating her 20th birthday at a friend's house on Saturday night when she set off on the walk from the inner-city suburb of Toowong to her home at Seventeen Mile Rocks.

The young woman had barely started the two-hour journey when a car slammed into her in the early hours of Sunday morning.

While some Coast friends said they had not seen the bright and bubbly girl in several years, they were still saddened.

"She was a happy, lovely girl. She didn't deserve this," friend Holly Kinnear said. "Everyone is just so shocked, there's not a bad bone in her body, and she was so beautiful and always smiling."

Police seized a car in relation to the hit-and-run death.

The vehicle was forensically tested after being impounded on Monday afternoon.

At the time, the police said the owner was assisting police with inquiries.
