BELL is the latest town in the Western Downs region to be connected to the National Broadband Network's fixed wireless network.

More than 200 homes and businesses in the township have been connected as part of the Federal Government's nationwide rollout of the fibre to the node network.

Member for Maranoa David Littleproud said the NBN would play a crucial role in the region's development moving forward.

"Modern telecommunications infrastructure is essential as it provides the platform we need to connect us not only with friends and family but also with limitless possibilities worldwide,” MrLittleproud said.

"Regional areas in Maranoa will greatly benefit from e-learning, telemedicine, video conferencing, tourism and business opportunities which a faster internet connection will provide.”

Mr Littleproud said residents needed to be on the ball when swapping over to the new network.

"Switching to the NBN isn't automatic,” he said.

"Residents and businesses need to contact their preferred service provider and place an order to move their landline phone and internet services over.

"Everyone connected to the fixed line NBN will have 18 months to make the switch before the old copper network is turned off,” MrLittleproud said.
