Blowing out 101 candles
CELEBRATING 101 years on this planet, one woman's birthday was made special in the company of friends and family on Monday morning.
Jessie Flegler, born in Pittsworth in 1917, was treated to speeches by her children and extended family at her home in Ningana Retirement Village.
A fruit cake, prepared by the staff at the retirement village, marked the occasion.
Gloria Hamilton said her mother had always enjoyed the baked goody.
"She liked her fruit cake. She used to make nice fruit cake, too, when she was younger.”
Though her memory is not what it used to be, Mrs Flegler remembers something special.
Mrs Hamilton said her mother had always been a great lover of poetry.
"It wasn't long ago when I was out here and she recited to me a poem that she had learnt before she went to school.”
She still knows it, plus words to many songs.
"She might forget sometimes who we are but she knows all the words to all those poems and songs from way, way, way back,” Mrs Hamilton said.
