BOM issues south-east Queensland storm warning update

SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING - SOUTHEAST QUEENSLAND for DAMAGING WIND, HEAVY RAINFALL and LARGE HAILSTONES

For people in the Noosa and parts of the Gympie, Southern Downs, Toowoomba, Lockyer Valley and Sunshine Coast Council Areas.

The Bureau of Meteorology warns that, at 3:15 pm, severe thunderstorms were detected on weather radar northwest of Toowoomba, near Warwick and Borumba Dam.


These thunderstorms are moving towards the east to northeast.

They are forecast to affect the northern parts of Toowoomba and Highfields, areas south and southeast of Gympie, and areas north of Warwick by 3:45 pm and the area northwest of Noosa Heads, the area north of Noosa Heads and the area east of Gympie by 4:15 pm.

Damaging winds, heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding and large hailstones are likely.

THE Bureau of Meteorology has issued a storm warning for south-east Queensland and the Darling Downs.

Locations which may be affected include Warwick, Toowoomba, Dalby, Maroochydore, Gympie and Kingaroy.

The Bureau of Meteorology warns that at 12:15 pm severe thunderstorms were detected on weather radar near Cooyar.

These thunderstorms are moving towards the east.

They are forecast to affect Blackbutt and Yarraman by 12:45 pm and Linville by 1:15 pm.

Damaging winds, heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding and large hailstones are likely.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services advises that people should: 

* Move your car under cover or away from trees. 
* Secure loose outdoor items. 
* Avoid driving, walking or riding through flood waters. 
* Seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees. 
* Avoid using the telephone during a thunderstorm. 
* Beware of fallen trees and powerlines. 
* For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132 500. 

The next warning is due to be issued by 1:10 pm.

A more general severe thunderstorm warning is also current for parts of the Wide Bay and Burnett, Maranoa and Warrego, Darling Downs and Granite Belt and Southeast Coast districts.
