Bowenville students' giant pumpkin success

BOWENVILLE State School students have punched above their weight by earning third place in the Royal Queensland Show's Giant Pumpkin Competition at the Brisbane Showgrounds.

Principal Michael Sutton said it was great to achieve success in a program the students enjoyed so much.

"We started growing the pumpkins at the start of the year,” Mr Sutton said.

"We had the seedlings in early so we were ready to roll, so we had it up and running at the start of the term.”

He said he had not expected to earn a place.

"It was our first time entering the competition so it was a pleasant surprise to come third,” he said.

"It's part of our kitchen garden program and we'll definitely lock it in and continue to do it in the future.”

The judging of the giant pumpkin competition signalled the official countdown to the Ekka, now just 90 days away.

Some of the pumpkins will return to Brisbane in August to be displayed during the show.
