British teen loses both legs in crash

MOTORSPORTS: Three-time Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton has sent a message of support to British Formula Four driver Billy Monger, who has had his lower legs amputated following a crash at Donington Park on Sunday.

"Thoughts and prayers are with you and your family," Hamilton wrote on Twitter after hearing the sad news.

Monger, 17, drove at speed into the back of another car that had halted on the track and was trapped in the wreckage for more than 90 minutes before being flown to hospital.

"Due to the injuries sustained and despite every effort, Billy has sadly had both lower legs amputated," the FIA sanctioned junior series, the first step on the single-seater ladder after karting, said in a statement.

"He has been kept in an induced coma while undergoing surgery, from which he is expected to be woken in the next few days."

A crowd-funding site was set up to raise funds for the teenager's medical treatment and recovery, with other Formula One drivers also expressing support on Twitter.

The Just Giving page aiming to raise $332,000 had already hit $536,000 within a day of going live.
