Brondello appointed new Opals head coach

BASKETBALL: Australian great and Phoenix Mercury head coach Sandy Brondello will coach the Australian Opals for their Tokyo 2020 Olympic campaign, Basketball Australian announced.

Brondello will continue in her role with the Mercury; a position she's had since 2014, winning a WNBA Championship and the league's Coach of the Year Award.

"I am very honoured to be selected for the role of Opals head coach," Brondello said in a press release.

"I am beyond excited about the opportunity and I look forward to being back with the Opals team and building towards success in Tokyo."

Brondello, 48, was a staple on the Opals during her playing days, competing at four Summer Olympics, where she won two silver medals and one bronze medal.

The shooting guard was also a two-time bronze medallist at the FIBA World Championships (1998 and 2002), and played 193 games in the WNBL during her storied career.

Basketball Australia and the Mercury have agreed to terms which will allow Brondello to coach both the WNBA team and the women's national team.

"We are enormously grateful for the support of the Mercury organisation in Sandy's appointment" Basketball Australia CEO, Anthony Moore, said.

"This is a fantastic acquisition for the Opals with Sandy owning an intimate knowledge of both the Opals and the international game. We are confident this will ensure we remain as one of the top basketball countries in the world."

Brondello will commence her duties as the Opals' head coach on May 1, with the team's first camp since the Rio Olympics set for May 3-11 in Phoenix, Arizona.
