Brother pays tribute to 'big-hearted' motorcyclist

A "PRACTICAL joker" with a "network of loyal friends" and a big heart - that's how Chris Poulios has described his brother.

Lionel Cockburn, 42, from Hay Point, died after a car travelling north on Hay Point Rd at Alligator Creek lost control about 5.30am Saturday.

The car veered onto the wrong side of the road before colliding with his motorbike, according to Queensland Police.

Mr Cockburn died a short time later at Mackay Base Hospital. Mr Poulios said his brother was "well-known and loved" in the Mackay region.

"Approximately 11 years ago, Lionel relocated to Mackay from Ceduna, South Australia, where he had lived and was a part of community consisting of family and friends," he said.

He worked for Downers, which is how he was why he settled at Hay Point.

"Work ended but because of his machinery operating skills he was employed by the Mass Group to work on the dams. He established a network of loyal friends."

Mr Poulios said his brother had a reputation for helping out just about everyone in need.

"Lionel had a passion for fishing and a couple of years ago he bought his Harley Davidson motorcycle," he said.

Mr Poulios said his brother now leaves behind "two communities of family and friends of which he was a big part".
