UPDATE 4.30PM: Goondiwindi Mayor Graeme Scheu has described the damage to Goondiwindi's Cultural Centre as "extensive", after an out of control bus slammed into the building yesterday.

The bus was travelling westbound on Elizabeth Dr when it left the road and crashed into the cultural centre at 4.30am.

Cr Scheu said the damage bill from the crash could prove costly.

"It's certainly not $2000 or $3000," he said.

"We're looking at a lot of money and extensive damage.

"The damage bill could be anywhere from $200,000 to $400,000."

10AM: The streets around Goondiwindi's Cultural Centre remain closed after a bus smashed into the building early this morning.

Police are still investigating how the bus ended up in the building at 4.30am.

The bus was driving westbound on Elizabeth Dr when it left the round and crashed in the cultural centre.

An exclusion road was set up around the building while emergency services dealt with a gas leak from gas bottles the bus came to rest on.

While the streets are closed, there is no apparent danger to residents in the area.

The 67-year-old bus driver was taken to Goondiwindi Hospital with minor injuries.

Emergency services crews rushed to the scene on the corner of Elizabeth Dr and Short St at 5.10am.

The bus was empty at the time, except for the driver who was able to get himself out.

A Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokeswoman said the bus had "gone through" the building and was sitting on top of two large gas bottles.

The bus driver has been transported to Goondiwindi Hospital in a stable condition.

It's believed he's suffering from a medical condition.

It's unclear at this stage how much damage has been done to the building.
