CANCELLED: Dalby PCYC junior netball will not go ahead

NETBALL: Cancelling the 2020 netball season was not a decision PCYC branch manager Brett Hunter ever wanted to make.

Unfortunately, strict COVIDsafe restrictions and shortened time frames meant the season could not go ahead, so the PCYC’s junior netballers have been left without their beloved Saturday sport.

“We’re disappointed we can’t provide the normal sport activity that we do,” Hunter said.

“But unfortunately with only half our season remaining, it’s not possible to run the normal season because we can’t let the teams run a comp and then have finals on such a short season.”

The club would only have had nine Saturdays left in term four to play the season, when normally a season runs for 19 Saturdays.

Remaining COVID-19 restrictions meant gameplay would have been altered drastically.

“We could only play on every second court which means we would either reduce the number of teams that we’d have playing all together or we’d have to double the length of time we played,” Hunter said.

“It would be an all day sport and that may not suit some families.”

The decision was made between Hunter and the PCYC zone supervisor, with help from netball coaches.

Hunter said it was a hard decision to make, but one that ultimately needed to be made for a number of reasons.

Logistically it would have been difficult for the season to push after it was initially put on hold when COVID-19 restrictions being coming into play around the state in March.

“We were waiting to see what changes there might be to the restrictions but there weren’t enough changes to allow it to be run,” he said.

“For us to run a proper sort of competition with finals we need longer so we would have had to go into term four.

“The problem with that is, parents and children are involved in other sports and activities and we’re then interfering with that.

“Several have said it was probably better just to cancel.

“It’s a business decision, it’s not only a sporting decision.

“I didn’t particularly want to have to do it, but you have to look at it not only as a short season but it impacts on our ability to do it and to do it cost-effectively.”

The PCYC will also be wrapping up their remaining sport activities in the coming weeks, including the ladies indoor netball, mixed basketball and mixed netball.
