CCTV no help in Chinchilla house fire investigation

POLICE are investigating how a vacant house with no power connection caught fire on Sunday night.

Dalby Criminal Investigation Branch plain clothes Senior Constable Scott Matthews investigated the scene on the corner of Short St and the Warrego Highway on Monday, along with a fire investigator and officer from the Dalby Scenes of Crime unit.

Snr Const Matthews said the cause of the blaze was still undetermined, and that he was waiting on the fire investigator's report.

"But obviously we're treating it as suspicious," he said.

Police have reviewed CCTV footage from surrounding businesses, which only shows smoke billowing from the property.

"We've made inquiries (for footage) which haven't been fruitful," he said.

"If anyone has seen anything suspicious that night, we think around 11pm, please contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or Chinchilla Police on 4672 9666."

Early on Monday morning, a Dalby Scenes of Crime officer removed two tins of evidence from inside the rear of the house.

Police are still trying to contact the property owner and the person who called in the fire.
