Cervical screening information sessions to be held in Downs

THE Pap smear test is a thing of the past, sort of, and many women across the Western Downs are unsure about the new procedure to detect cervical cancer.

As of December 1, 2017, the Pap smear test was replaced by new cervical screening test, to be completed every five years.

The test is said to look and feel the same as a Pap smear to patients, but for doctors it will provide more in depth data to increase its chances of detecting the disease.

Information sessions will be held in Western Downs hospitals next month to help guide women through the new testing and answer any questions.

Barbara Milne from the Darling Downs Hospital and Health Service (DDHHS), said it was important women knew about the new screen process.

"Cervical cancer is one of the most preventable cancers. The new cervical screening test is more accurate, needs to be done less often, and is expected to protect up to 30 per cent more women,” Ms Milne said.

"The test is a simple procedure to check the health of the cervix. It looks and feels the same as the pap test, but tests for the human papillomavirus (known as HPV).”

Bookings are required for the information sessions and can be made by phone the respective hospitals.

Information sessions will be held at:

  • Dalby Hospital: Tuesday February 6 and Thursday February 15, 8.15am-2.30pm.
  • Chinchilla Hospital: Friday February 2, 9am-2pm and Monday February 5, 8.30am-2pm.
  • Miles Hospital: Wednesday February 14, 9.30am-1pm.
  • Tara Hospital, Monday February 19, 9am-2pm.
