Chance to sing with the stars

OPERA Queensland is giving residents around the region the opportunity to lift up their voices alongside professional singers and musicians in this year's Opera at Jimbour, to be held on July 22.

OperaQ is on the hunt for up to 46 talented local singers to join Emily Burke, David Hobson, Virgilio Marino, and a host of other stars in a semi-staged concert version of Franz Lehár's The Merry Widow, one of the world's most popular operettas.

Auditions will be held at the Empire Theatre on February 17 and 18, and auditionees will need to perform one song or aria. Successful auditionees will form the Opera Queensland Toowoomba Community Chorus for The Merry Widow.

With heritage-listed Jimbour House as the backdrop, thousands of locals are predicted to flock to Opera at Jimbour to enjoy a music-filled afternoon and picnic.

Emma Burke, who will star in the production as the Merry Widow, said it was a phenomenal opportunity.

"It's absolutely awesome, it's a stunning location with the amazing house in the background and all of the space for heaps of people to come, it's a brilliant idea,” she said.

"I would say if you are even half thinking about it, just have a go...there's nothing to lose!”

"This will be my fourth production with a community chorus, and every single one has been different, but they've all been amazing...I think the exhileration and pride is really something...it's really infectious.”

The event forms part of the 2017 Queensland Music Festival, a statewide celebration of music running from July 7-30 this year.
