Cowboys coach Paul Green will set the club's young try-scoring genius Gideon Gela-Mosby loose in this weekend's Auckland Nines along with 33-year-old veteran Matt Bowen.

Green said he was using the tournament as preparation for the club's trip to contest the World Club Challenge in England later this month.

"I've used it as an opportunity to give a bit of time to some young blokes like Hessy (Cohen Hess) and Gideon Gela-Mosby ... and to also give experienced guys a bit of game time as well before we head off to England," Green said.

Gela-Mosby, who doesn't turn 20 until the of the year, scored 39 tries for the Cowboys NYC side last year and is a real flyer.

Bowen, an all-time Cowboys favourite, is back in North Queensland's colours for the Nines after playing for Wigan in the English Super League for the past few seasons.

Green said the players had not really prepared for the Nines format but would be trying to repeat their win in the inaugural Auckland Nines in 2014.

Thirteen members of the Cowboys' history-making premiership side will make the trip.

Brisbane coach Wayne Bennett, meanwhile, has handed the Nines' captaincy to Sam Thaiday, who says he has been working on a few trick plays and try celebrations.

"It's about time Wayne (Bennett) gave me a go in the Auckland Nines," he said. "I can show off all my skills and look for a chip-and-chase or a few flick passes, I'm going to bring all the tricks out."
