Cronulla ‘memorial’ rally blocked
THE New South Wales Supreme Court has blocked a rally marking the 10th anniversary of the Cronulla anti-Muslim riots from going ahead today, on the grounds it may have provoked racial hatred.
The leader of the far-right Party for Freedom, Nicholas Folkes, admitted in court he could not guarantee there would not be violence at the "memorial" protest.
"I am not responsible for other people's behaviour. I am not responsible for the left's behaviour," he said.
Justice Christine Adamson ruled in favour of the NSW police commissioner, amid fears the event would spark counter rallies and violent clashes.
In a separate action, the Federal Court ruled in favour of an application to prevent any other groups or individuals from commemorating the anniversary.
