THE monthly Warra Markets will be extra sweet when it joins forces with the RSPCA Cupcake Day this Sunday morning.

RSPCA Cupcake Day officially takes place on Monday, August 21, but the Warra Markets are getting in early to help make a stand for animal welfare.

The event encourages bakers to sell cupcakes and raise funds for the RSPCA, which in turn will help rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome the 135,000 animals that come through RSPCA shelters every year.

Warra Market co-ordinator and owner of Western Warradina cafe Leanne Scott said it was her combined love of baking and animals that inspired her to take part in the RSPCA Cupcake Day.

"I am a baker and pastry chef and I own a cafe here at Warra,” Mrs Scott said.

"This is my second year doing the Cupcake Day.

"We've got dogs ourselves and a family love for animals, so when we saw it advertised on TV last year, we thought we'd support the RSPCA,” she said.

"(The RSPCA) rang me again this year and asked if we'd do it again,” she said.

"Last year we sold 150 cupcakes, so this year we're going for 200.”

The Warra Markets will also offer a range of plants and bric-a-brac, but MrsScott said the usual selection of cakes would be on hold this month to encourage people to buy the RSPCA cupcakes.

The Western Warradina cafe will be open for meals.

The markets run from 8am-noon at the Warra post office, Warrego Hwy.
