Dalby hero honoured by museum

ANZAC Day holds a particularly personal meaning for Janette Burch and her family.

Mrs Burch’s great uncle Lance-Corporal Jack Draney, a Dalby carpenter , died in action in 1916 aged 26.

And this year his portrait will be used as the face of the Museum of Brisbane’s new exhibition ‘Facing World War I: Stories of loyalty, loss and love’.

When Mrs Burch heard the museum was seeking pictures of soldiers, she took in the portraits she had.

“We were brought up with a real reverence for Anzac Day and his portrait hung on my grandmothers wall all her life,” Mrs Burch said.

“The people at the museum were intrigued that we had a photo of his riderless horse with the grave; it sort of captured the loss.”

Mrs Burch will attend the official opening of the exhibition this Friday on behalf of the family.

“There’s only one of my aunts of that line left with us; she is 88 and it was quite a thrill for her that the portrait was being used in that way, especially since it’s the 100th year since he died,” she said.

“I’m very much looking forward to seeing how they’ve laid out the exhibition. I think it’ll be an eye-opener and quite profound.”

Facing World War I: stories of loyalty, loss and love runs from April 22-August 28 at the Museum of Brisbane.
