Dalby shines at Downs titles

GYMNASTICS: Young gymnasts at the Dalby PCYC have punched above their weight at the recent Darling Downs regional titles.

The Dalby club had plenty of success at the championship, with eight making the Darling Downs team to compete at state titles.

This is an achievement which surpassed all expectations, including their head coach Janelle Stewart.

Stewart said she was hopeful of one member of the club qualifying for the Darling Downs team but to boast eight was special for the whole team.

"It is great to see we can be competitive in our region,” she said.

"I think every one of my gymnasts achieved the goals we set out for them.

"It is an awesome feeling.”

The boys level three side was the stand-out group of the championships, with five of the six competitors qualifying for the team.

Riley Mortimer, the only level four boy at the Dalby club, was crowned champions of his division at the championships.

There were plenty of other notable achievements from the event, as well for the club.

Several gymnasts placed across the their divisions, which Stewart said was a positive sign for the group.

"We had plenty of placing across all apparatus at the competition, which reflects the hard work and dedication our gymnasts put in at training,” she said.

The junior state titles will be held in a fortnight, with 22 members of the club competing.

Stewart said having such a large number at state titles was a credit to the competitors' hard work.
