Dalrymple MP asks to keep rural seats in boundaries review

IN A question time filled with attacks on Billy Gordon and Labor, one rural MP sought assurance today that no more rural electorates would be abolished in next year's redistribution.

Electoral redistribution occurs to balance the number of voters in each district, meaning boundaries can be changed and seats abolished or created.

The process is undertaken by the Queensland Redistribution Commission about every eight years.

Dalrymple MP Shane Knuth told Queensland Parliament three rural seats were abolished to create additional seats in the Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast and Brisbane districts during the 2008 redistribution.

The Katter's Australian Party member asked Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk if she would ensure rural and regional electorates were not disadvantaged during the next redistribution in February next year.

Ms Palaszczuk said she could have no influence over the process, but praised her rural and regional colleagues for "standing up and representing their communities" across the state.

"I know (of) that firsthand by just recently going out on a drought tour and meeting with people in those remote regions about the huge impact that the drought is having on those communities," she said.

"It is my understanding that during this term of government the Electoral Commission will conduct a review of the boundaries.

"That is completely independent from government and it is at arm's length.

"It is only when you go out on the ground and meet with the people and listen to the communities that you appreciate the large, encompassing job that they (rural MPs) have to perform, the amount of travel that they have to undertake from community to community."
