Darling Downs wins SQ rugby championships

RUGBY UNION: Both Darling Downs sides came away with convincing wins against the Gold Coast yesterday on the final day of the South Queensland Rugby Championships.

The opens game was of extra importance for Darling Downs as the South Queensland Rugby Championships title was up for grabs and the players delivered in spades as they defeated comfortably a game Gold Coast side 23-3.

Darling Downs opens coach Nathan Bradley said he was extremely happy with his team's performance.

"What I was really impressed with today were our debutants and interchange players,” he said.

"I was confident we would come out strong and our second unit was that good that we lost nothing when they came on.”

With eight fresh new faces in this year's squad, Bradley said Downs rugby was in good hands.

"Downs rugby continues to go from strength to strength,” he said.

"We've worked hard on the senior rep program and successful tournaments such as this shows that it is paying dividends”.

In the colts fixture, Darling Downs put on a clinical display, dominating its opposition from start to finish and ultimately winning the match 43-19.

The win ensured the Darling Downs colts side finished second, with the Sunshine Coast Stingrays finishing atop the division.

Selections for the South Queensland team will be announced in the coming days.

Those selected will travel to Townsville to compete in the Queensland Country Championships next month.
