TWEED Deputy Mayor Gary Bagnall has pleaded not guilty to charges of assault and intimidation against fellow councillor Carolyn Byrne.

Cr Bagnall faced Murwillumbah Local Court today following an alleged altercation between the two councillors after the September mayoral election when Cr Byrne said Cr Bagnall swore at and intimidated her.

Represented by solicitor Russell Baxter, Cr Bagnall pleaded not guilty to the charges before Magistrate Paul MacMahon.

The case, including a forensic application, will be heard again in the Murwillumbah courthouse on January 25.

Meanwhile, an Apprehended Violence Order sought by Cr Byrne was granted without admission of liability.

Under conditions of the order, Cr Bagnall has agreed not to "assault, molest, harass, threaten or otherwise interfere with" Cr Byrne over the next 12 months.

The order is not expected to interfere with council operations.

Cr Bagnall declined to comment outside court.
