30 cows, calves destroyed after truck rollover
UPDATE: About 30 of the 160 cows and calves on a cattle truck that rolled in southwest Queensland have been destroyed.
Emergency services were called to the rollover on the Mitchell Hwy, about 10km north of Charleville near the Avadale turn-off about 5.30am.
A prime-mover truck with two loaded trailers carting the combined 130-head of cattle rolled, with the driver and passenger uninjured in the incident.
Police secured the area and coordinated with veterinarians who assessed the cattle at the scene.
Some died on impact while others were humanely destroyed, police said.
The Mitchell Hwy was blocked for hours but traffic was diverted around the wreckage.
Authorities remained on scene for about eight hours as the area was cleared of the animals and the wrecked truck and trailers.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
7.30AM: Police are at the scene of a truck crash outside Charleville.
Around 6.30am, a cattle truck rolled on the Mitchell Hwy about 10km north of Charleville, near the Avadale turn-off.
The driver and a passenger were uninjured in the crash.
Between 20 and 30 head of cattle have been injured and police are coordinating veterinary assistance to ensure they are euthanased humanely.
Although the highway is blocked, traffic is being allowed through alongside the crash site under the direction of police.
