STUDENTS at Dalby South have hit the ground writing, not running, for the start of the new school year.
In 2017, the school will continue its focus on the areas of reading and writing, with the goal of continuous improvement across the school.
With students displaying improved enthusiasm and higher standardised test scores, staff at DSS attributed the success to their three year developmental process guided by world renowned literacy consultant Ann Korab.
"Ann is from Victoria, and has spent quite an amount of time in schools in New York and has brought back the best and most recent research practises,” deputy principal Kate Paynter said.
"We have brought her in as an external consultant, and she also comes once a term, and we have various ways of developing teachers' skills.
"We consider it to be the best and most current in terms of research practise and we are really starting to see results.
"Through standardised testing we've seen that reading levels have improved right across the board.
"The quality of the writing as well... it's much richer and more exciting and more interesting.”
In an effort to create a suitable reading environment for all students, each classrooms has a class library, complete with individual student book boxes containing a range of texts chosen by both the student and teacher.
"We go through the process determining if the book is right for them or their level of reading and whether it will extend their skills,” Ms Paynter said.
"The kids are enjoying reading and writing more too, they're instantly engaged and have more ideas, and they're really proud of what they're producing.”
