Dumped on the first date for friend's pal

JOURNALIST Sarah Swain has covered dating and relationships for years. Swain (pictured) describes her work as reporting from the trenches of online dating in her regular column, Single in Sydney, for the Daily Telegraph. With more than a few disasters under her belt, Sarah describes three of her most awkward first dates.

Photos did not fit the bill

I recently met a guy that I connected with via an online dating site. I had seen some photos of him, but they were just head and shoulder photos, so to say I was surprised when I saw him for the first time is an understatement. He was not only rather overweight, but wearing the clothes of a morbidly obese person.

He spent most of his time complaining to me about his life, especially his work. He was so negative about everything. The most awkward moment though was when he told me he didn't travel - at all, because he couldn't fit into any seats on a plane. You know quickly if you do or don't find someone attractive, but you can't just run, so I had to have at least one drink before making my excuses.

Cheeky expectations

I met this guy on Tinder and we arranged to meet at this cool, pizza/bar. The date went quite well, though I probably had one too many wines and we ended up kissing. Then when I went to leave and it was clear that I wasn't going to ask him back to my place, he just turned his back on me and walked off.

Switching places

I was living in Dubai and I met this guy at the polo. He seemed really lovely, though he lived in Qatar, about an hour's flight from where I lived. We arranged for him to come over for the weekend to meet me and I arranged this fabulous hotel for him to stay at. We went and had lunch and drinks, where a female friend of mine turned up unexpectedly. After lunch he insisted we go and sit with her and her friends. Later, when he and I were ordering drinks at the bar, he said to me that he did not think it was working out with us, so I left, obviously a bit upset. And of course, it turned out that he got together with my friend's pal and, I suspect even took her to the hotel room that I had arranged.
