Embattled Dalby girls fight it out in tough league season
RUGBY LEAGUE: EVEN though their season was hindered by the perils of coronavirus, these Dalby girls were still able to give it a crack on the footy field this season.
The U14 and U16 Dalby Devils junior teams were fighting an uphill battle this year due to low player numbers, and tough teams from across the Western Downs and Toowoomba.
Dalby Devils Coach Michael Webber said the girls were relatively new to the sport, but they had given it their all this season.
“This season for the girls was all about learning that rugby league is a team game, and they were able to come together in training, and commit together,” he said.
“It’s a different environment for them with it being a physical sport, however they were able to stick up for their mates when the going got tough.
“We’re extremely proud of their efforts this season, especially when for most of them it was their first season in footy.”
Due to short numbers, players from the Pittsworth Danes were able to join the Devils in order to create a super team to battle it out in this year’s season.
Mr Webber said the U14s had a commendable season playing against some quality teams, recording a couple of wins along the way.
The U16s fight improved tremendously according to Mr Webber, especially with many of the players being at the younger end of the age bracket.
“Next year they’ll have the addition from the girls coming through from U14s, so they’ll be more competitive,” he said.
“Overall it was still a great season for the girls.”
The Dalby Devils girls were rewarded for their efforts on the paddock on October 9 at their annual awards night.
