Battle of man versus 4m shark in three hour ordeal

IT PROVED to be the battle of his life, man versus the ocean's most fearsome creature -- and he was only 19.

Max Muggeridge took on a mighty 12 foot / 3.84m tiger shark for more than three hours at Pottsville on the northern New South Wales Coast.

Max was on a fishing trip at Rainbow Beach in Queensland, but once the weather turned sour, he decided to travel south.

It is hard to imagine anyone believing him when he says he caught a fish this big but thankfully he has the photos to prove it.

He was on the beach from before 3am, but it was a little after 7.15am that things started to happen.

The line tightened and "I knew I was engaged into something I potentially couldn't handle", as he fought with just his girlfriend by his side and his hands gripping "an almost 40-year-old Penn Senator 12/0 antique".

As the monster dragged his line 900m out, it took a sharp left, forcing Max to run down the beach.

"Had it have continued on its way another 50m, this report would be a completely different story."

For the first hour, it made a mockery out of him. He tells of blisters, sweat, burns and sunscreen irritating his eyes.

"Thoughts crossed my head like I can't do this, it's too big, I'm not prepared enough, I'm on my own."

In the second hour there was progress. He also saw his monster leap from the water.

Just as the third hour ticked over, he had it on the shore.

A few quick photos later and this magnificent lady of the deep had vanished.

"I wouldn't change the experience for anything in the world, it was true old school sharkin'."
