Former pre-school book-keeper convicted

Fraudster gets jail time after fleecing $58k from pre-school

THE FORMER Evans Head Woodburn pre-school finance administrator was jailed for 12 months yesterday after pleading guilty to defrauding more than $58,000 from the not-for-profit association.

Jenny Louise Anderson appeared in Casino Local Court facing 41 charges of dishonestly obtaining financial advantage by deception and two charges of obtaining money by deception.

The charges related to the fleecing of $58,232.62 from the Evans Head Woodburn Pre-School Association over a year, from February 4, 2010.

The court heard the 58-year-old woman, who now lives in Queensland, conducted more than 40 fraudulent transactions on the association's bank account over 12 months.

In February 2011 the fraud was uncovered and the pre-school was advised.

The matter was reported to police who conducted an extensive investigation and eventually charged Anderson in February 2015.

Anderson's solicitor Peter Walsh told the court that being charged finally made her confront what she had done.

"It was too difficult for her to confront and to deal with," he said.

Mr Walsh said Anderson got a job with Snore Australia, but was too afraid to tell her employer about the charges as she feared she would be sacked.

"The community organisation entrusted its finances to the defendant," he said.

"By way of her having access to the books she was paying herself more than she was due."

Mr Heilpern questioned why Anderson hadn't attempted to pay back the money.

"It's been four years and not one cent has been paid, not even a letter of apology, and she has been earning $50,000 a year."

In sentencing Anderson to 12 months jail with a non-parole period of six months, Mr Heilpern said she committed an offence purely of greed.

"It's not one snatch and grab in a fit of insanity."
