Expert warns terrorism would hurt regional economies

ECONOMIC shockwaves will be felt across regional communities if terrorists ever strike in Australia.

A leading terrorism expert says major export and transport hubs across regional NSW and Queensland are at risk.

MORE ON PARIS ATTACKS

Griffith University's Professor Andrew O'Neil said even though militants were more likely to target capital cities for their shock and awe value, there would be repercussions in regional Australia.

"The big thing for Australia internationally is trade," Prof O'Neil told APN Newsdesk.

"So safeguarding our transport hubs, ports, roads, rail networks and so on is really crucial in the event of a terror attack.

"There would be disruptions to coal exports in Queensland and other areas. That would be the primary hit.

"A quick way to paralyse us is to hit our vulnerable transport networks so the goods cannot be delivered to the ports."

Neither the Federal Government or Opposition responded to APN Newsdesk's requests for comment about the potential impact on regional communities.
