CRASH REMNANT: The engine recovered from Saturday’s Woolooga air crash scene awaits forensic examination

Search for answers begins after fatal plane crash

WRECKAGE recovered from Saturday's air crash scene near Woolooga will now be subject to detailed forensic examination, as investigators try to determine the cause of the crash.

Smashed wings, fuel tanks and the aircraft's eight-cylinder Jabiru engine are now in the Gympie police holding yard, pending further examination by police and the light aircraft authority, Recreational Aviation Australia.

The plane crashed not long after take-off on its way from Gympie's Kybong aerodrome to a property near the Burnett Hwy, west of Gladstone on Saturday.

The pilot, Rob Pavan, 60, of Yandina, appears to have been killed on impact when the plane went down in ruggedly mountainous country north-west of Woolooga.

Mr Pavan's body is now understood to have been recovered from the almost inaccessible crash location, at the top of a 500m high razorback ridge between two privately owned grazing properties.

Bad weather and treacherous terrain hampered search efforts at the weekend and debris was discovered by accident when a quad bike rider checking fences, found items which he told police could be aircraft wreckage.

Helicopter access proved impossible in the prevailing conditions and police successfully negotiated a sometimes terrifying and precipitous goat-track route up the ridge.

Confronted part way up by a narrow, slippery track with a 300m drop on one side, police made it to the top, but called for help rather than attempt the return journey along the same route.
