Felton cage-free egg farm plans 600,000 bird expansion

AN EGG farm west of Toowoomba will hope to make changes to existing approved plans to expand its operation by 600,000 cage-free birds.

The McLean Gardens Egg Production Facility on Homestead Rd in Felton, which is owned by Alpair Pty Ltd, was approved to expand its facility by another 20 cage-free laying sheds, a new packing shed and other infrastructure in late 2015.

In letters to the Toowoomba Regional Council, the company through town planner PSA Consulting Australia said more upgrades would be needed, including a further expansion of the packing shed, a new storage space for holding eggs prior to distribution and other changes to accommodate more stock and transport needs.

The applicants said the change was needed to take advantage of distributing to customers in Pittsworth directly, rather than shipping to Brisbane.

No changes are being proposed for the 20 new sheds, which will house up to 30,000 cage-free chickens each.

"As demonstrated above, the proposed changes will not alter the intensity, scale, or overall impacts of the development compared to that which was originally approved," the application wrote.

All plans feature space for a potential new solar farm next to the new storage sheds, as well as proposed caretakers building and a new security gate.

The expansion isn't the only project Alpair has in the works, with the company presenting a plan to build a 200,000-bird organic egg facility east of the Gardens operation earlier this year.

Alpair Pty Ltd is hoping to crack into the growing demand for eggs by constructing an organic egg laying and poultry rearing farm.
