Fey set to debut at Games for Australia
HOCKEY: Sunshine Coast's Ashlea Fey will make her debut at the Commonwealth Games after being named in the 18-member Australian Hockeyroos team.
Both the Hockeyroos' and Kookaburras' teams aiming for gold at the Gold Coast were announced on Friday.
Fellow Coaster and veteran star Jodie Kenny was also named in the squad.
Fey, who played her junior hockey for Maroochydore, was ecstatic to be given the opportunity.
"It's a massive honour and a real privilege to be (named) and I know there is a lot of people that would love to live this dream so I'm actually just really stoked that I can do this,” Fey said.
The defensive talent first broke into the national squad in late 2016 for a clash against New Zealand and has since featured in a range of international clashes for the Hockeyroos at the International Festival of Hockey and Oceania Cup.
Debuting on the Commonwealth stage was a dream come true for Fey and she said there was plenty to look forward to, but she was determined to remain focussed on the task at hand.
"The hype of the village and how the Comm Games actually will be (is exciting),” Fey said.
"I won't be expecting it but I also don't want it to overwhelm me in anyway so I'm trying to play that down a bit so I don't get consumed by the wrong kind of thing.”
She was steeled to give the April competition her all, and wanted to leave with no regrets.
"I wouldn't say it's a relief (to be selected) but I feel like I have a lot to do now and I don't want to leave anything out,” she said.
"I don't want to be disappointed looking back on the Comm Games thinking I could've done more.”
She said the Hockeyroos team, based in Perth, was looking strong and was confident of a top outing at the Games.
"I think the team we have right now is very solid and we've been performing well over the last few months so I think we've all done the hard yards,” she said.
