Filmmakers head into cougar territory for documentary
ADMIT it, you've probably wondered what cougars - and we are not talking the animal variety - are really like.
Jarrod Carter's interest was piqued at 18 watching his middle-aged boss cavort with younger men in a Sunshine Coast Coles store.
When he moved out of the Coles "deli" and became a Queensland University of Technology filmmaking student, he had the opportunity to find out.
Jarrod has directed his first documentary, Cougars: the Documentary.
And already it has tongues wagging and has gained critical acclaim, being nominated for Best Tertiary Documentary at the 2014 Atom Awards in Melbourne.
The documentary hit the online world when it was launched on YouTube yesterday.
"When I was working with one, it was a bit like the Bold and the Beautiful,'' Jarrod said.
"I used to wonder if this is what the real cougars were like, if this was normal.''
He didn't get to interview his former boss for the documentary, but managed to find three other willing participants. They included a woman who used to live on the Sunshine Coast called Sonia.
Sonia, then 42, was involved with a man 15 years younger than herself whom she met on a "speed dating" event on the Coast.
"She was the oldest at the event and he was the youngest," Jarrod said.
The documentary showed how their relationship was "never easy".
"She was with him for 18 months,'' Jarrod said.
"Her biggest issue was if he was going to leave her and go for a younger woman.''
One of the other cougars, Brigette, used to be a stunt-woman.
"She is the epitome of a Gold Coast girl, but she is also the head at a pharmacy,'' Jarrod said.
"She is very down-to-earth and sporty."
His favourite was 60-year-old Virginia, also from the Gold Coast.
While Jarrod had the stereotypical image of a cougar in his head "with fake boobs, tan and all", he discovered there was more to it than that.
"It's more about love. They are smart, confident and sexy and they know what they want and don't play games.''
