POLICE are treating a fire caused by a gas leak at the Toowoomba mosque as suspicious.

Emergency crews rushed to the property at West St at about 1.15pm to find fumes generated by the leak pouring into the building as well as minor damage.

Islamic Society of Toowoomba founding president Professor Shahjahan Khan said it looked as though someone tried to burn the door and leak gas into the main meeting hall.

Toowoomba's first mosque was opened last year after years of fundraising by local groups.
