GUNS, thousands of ammunition rounds, drugs and explosives have reportedly been found hidden underneath a chicken coop as police arrest a 70-year-old Tara man.

Detectives from Major and Organised Crime Squad Rural, based in Toowoomba, Kingaroy and Roma, executed a search warrant on a rural property in Daybreak Rd, Tara.

Police have arrested a 70-year-old man on a number of charges relating to the investigation.

It will be alleged that marijuana, marijuana plant and seeds were hidden in 200-litre storage drums underground beneath a chicken coop.

Also underground were "illegal long-arm rifles,” according to the QPS media release.

From here, police searched the 30-acre property, where they found more "harvested cannabis crop sites,” as well as more than 4000 full metal jacket SKS and AK-47 rounds.

The 70-year-old has been charged with possessing and producing dangerous drugs, possessing drug utensils, possessing unregistered and unsecured firearms and possessing a significant quantity of explosives.

Detective Sergeant Mark Ferling, of MOCS Rural, said these operations were conducted in an effort to maintain the safety of the community.

"These types of operations in regional communities are a key focus of the squad, once again instinctive search techniques have removed more illegal firearms and ammunition from the hands of criminals,” Det Sgt Ferling said.

The 70-year-old will appear in Dalby Magistrates Court on August 15.

Across the operation, police also arrested five people in Tara, Condamine, Miles and Wandoan on drug and weapons charges.
