Former Lions star comes to town
Local footy teams will have the chance to learn from a legend at the Dalby Swans training session this week.
Three time premiership player Jason Akermanis will be at the Dalby Swans football grounds on Friday May 24 to provide a free clinic for kids aged six to 15 in the region.
Dalby Swans President Matt Waye said the opportunity was a chance for the teams to learn from one of the greats.
"It's an opportunity that we don't usually get,” he said.
"There are some very good players among the clubs that might be looking forward to having a future in football, so it's an opportunity to get some hints and tips off him.”
"I really hope it stimulates the kids to stay excited about playing Aussie Rules, it really is a great sport.”
Access to Akermanis' tips and tricks is not limited club members, as Waye encourages children in Dalby to come and get involved in the game.
"Aussie rules is a great sport, if you've never tried it come try it, if you've tried it and liked it come try again,” he said.
Waye said he hopes the the Swans juniors teams will learn some basic skills for the season from Akermanis.
"It's been a tough start to the season for the kids but they're gelling well,” he said.
"The U12s had a couple of tight losses, the U14s had a great win and a couple of encouraging performances.
"As long as they're out there having fun and pulling on a Swannies jumper, that's all we're asking for.”
The 15 round season runs until late August.
Waye said the support of local sponsors sealed the deal in bringing Akermains to Dalby.
"They've really stumped up the money to make this free,” he said.
"We wouldn't be able to do it without those guys and we wouldn't have a club without our sponsors.”
Children aged 6-15 are welcome to join the fun at the Swans Football Club on Friday May 24, 4pm to 7pm.
