New souvenir collection designed, produced by locals

FROM the Southern Great Barrier Reef, to industry and community, local artist Ping Carlyon has depicted Gladstone's greatest assets in a new collection of souvenirs for the region.

The collection, called Four Six 8 0, was developed by the team at Amarna using Ping's artistic skills and local suppliers including Gladstone Printing Services and Limestone Clothing to produce the unique souvenirs.

Originally from Taiwan with a degree as an art education teacher, Ping has lived in Calliope for eight years with her husband.

Shortly after coming to Gladstone she had the first of two daughters, who have been keeping her busy. Now that the youngest is in school, she has found the time to paint again.

"I love painting, it makes me really happy," she said.

"I go out fishing with my family and see the reef, and when we go past the harbour we see the industry.

"It's all so beautiful and I want everyone to see how beautiful it is."

While interest has been shown in a local Agnes Water collection, Ping would also like to develop some Calliope-specific paintings while Amarna sees the entire region - the Boyne Valley, Boyne Island and Tannum Sands, and Miriam Vale also eventually represented.

Amarna director Crystal McGregor said the value of industry, environment and liveability in Gladstone were present in each piece of art, and demonstrated how living in 4680 was unlike anywhere else.

With more than 1500 visitors a month stopping through the Gladstone Visitor Information Centre, the group hopes locals and visitors alike embrace the collection.
