UPDATE: Residents of a Harlaxton street were forced to evacuate their homes on Tuesday afternoon after a gas main was ruptured by property inspectors.

Eugenia St residents gathered at a neighbour's property after Queensland Fire and Emergency Services and police shut the street about 1pm.

Eleven houses were evacuated after a contractor ruptured an underground natural gas line.

Ambulance officers were put on stand-by as QFES crews in breathing apparatus checked the scene.

Among them was Jean Wilson, 93, who rather than see the incident as an inconvenience, revelled in the change in routine.

"When you seen ambulances, you think of somebody being sick or knocked down or something," she said.

"I was sitting doing crosswords.

"But anyway, I'm always ready for a bit of a laugh, a bit of fun, if this can be called fun."

The scene was declared safe about 2.30pm.

BREAKING: Emergency services have evacuated a Toowoomba street after a gas line was broken this afternoon.

Residents in Eugenia St in Harlaxton were evacuated after the line was ruptured about 1.10pm.

Two Queensland Fire and Emergency Services crews are in breathing apparatus and investigating the area.

Police are on scene evacuating residents as the area is secured.

Queensland Ambulance paramedics have been put on stand-by at the street.
