FIRE fighters have returned to the scene of the blaze that destroyed Gatton's Imperial Hotel.

As investigations into the cause of the fire began, firefighters were required to enter the old Wyman's clothing store building, which sustained some damage in the extreme heat of the blaze.

The crews checked on several "hot spots" that were found in the ceiling of the neighbouring building.

The full extent of the damage to the Wyman's building is not known, with structural engineers required to check on exactly how badly damaged it is as a result of the fire, which started at the Imperial Hotel in the early hours of Thursday morning.

Although the hotel was not thought to have been occupied at the time, fire investigators were required to comb through the remains to make sure there were no bodies, as there was the slight possibility that squatters had entered. It was believed power was connected to the hotel at the time of the blaze, however investigations are yet to point to a cause.
