Grazier shares water woes amidst drought declaration push
CYRIL Barbeler remembers the days when his cattle didn't have to scratch around for feed.
A former farmer out at a Tinana property, Mr Barbeler is one of the many graziers across the Coast feeling the pinch of the dry spell across the Fraser Coast, and may soon face real water issues if things don't pick up.
With the property in the family since the 1860s, Mr Barbeler said there was a real concern they could run out of irrigation water if rainfall didn't pick up.
"If we don't get rain, we'll only have a couple of weeks' worth of irrigation water left to sustain work," he said.
"It's just from the lack of rain; we're in the rainy season right now, and we're getting nothing.
"There's very little feed around, so the cows are just scratching at what they can. Watering holes are also going down, cattle is getting weaker as well."
Mr Barbeler's concerns come amidst a period of low rainfall for the Fraser Coast, which has the Bureau of Meteorology worried about the shortage.
Maryborough itself only received 16mm in January - about 10% of the 165mm average rainfall for the month.
It's spurred councillor James Hansen to push for drought declaration across the Fraser Coast, with a plan to make a deputation to the local minister about the issue.
Cr Hansen said the push for the declaration would allow primary producers to get rebates on their cartage, which would open up avenues for the financial support.

"We need to go to the Department of Primary Industries and say to them that we need to push for drought declarations...for the whole Fraser Coast," he said.
"The long term predictions aren't looking good; I feel it for the cane producers and primary producers. As a farmer myself, we're really looking down the barrel."
It's a proposal that Mr Barbeler could get behind, in all the circumstances.
"I support the proposal; there's no harm in asking for it," he said.
"Whether we get it or not is the big question, of course."
Cr Hansen also indicated his support for the Paradise Dam proposal, which would see water from the dam be used for irrigation in the Maryborough electorate.
"It certainly needs to be looked at; water security is a big issue in this part of the world, and the paradise dam has been sitting there as a white elephant now for 10-15 years," he said.
The Fraser Coast Regional Council announced that water consumption across the Coast has doubled since last week.
