Great League grand finals moments from yesteryear

THE Broncos and Cowboys are set to create history in the NRL's first All-Queensland grand final at ANZ Stadium on Sunday.

Both teams are stacked full of talent, with the game promising to be one of the greatest deciders in the game's history.

APN's rugby league expert Wayne Heming has delved back through the archives to come up with the top dozen grand final moments that were crucial in deciding the winner in that year.

Here are the final three - let's hope plenty more will make their way into the history books in this year's decider.

1999: Melbourne v St George Illawarra:

A MOMENT of madness when a grand final was decided on the biggest call in history.

Melbourne halfback Brett Kimmorley put up a bomb which winger Craig Smith caught, but in the process of lunging over the try line to score the winner, was whacked in a high tackle by Dragons rival Jamie Ainscough.

The world record crowd for a rugby league game roared as Smith lay prone on the ground, as referee Bill Harrigan sent the decision upstairs.

Harrigan later recalled the words that came back from the video referees; "prepare for the call of the millennium, penalty try".

Melbourne won by two points.

1986: Parramatta v Canterbury

APART  from the record low 4-2 scoreline, this game will be remembered for the image of a spent Ray Price, struggling to stay on his feet as teammates chaired another Eels great, Mick Cronin, off the SCG after a remarkable game in which neither side was able to get across the try line.

1980: Canterbury v Eastern Suburbs

BULLDOGS winger Steve Gearin's remarkable try blew the 1980 grand final open, and ranks alongside the greatest grand final moments of all time.

Dogs fullback Greg Brentnall made a run before reefing a bomb high in the air.

Easts had three defenders running to the ball, but Gearin came flying through at full pace and took the ball from the clutches of Rooster winger David Michael to score a crucial try.

Gearin didn't score many tries, but that one became his calling card and still rates up with the best ever seen.
