Grey nomads living the dream with a difference
TRAVELLING around Australia in a campervan in your retirement years isn't a new phenomenon.
But Gloria Bristow-Miell and her husband, Allan Miell, have done it with a difference.
Gloria has written a book of the happy couple's travels, detailing the hidden gems and unique characters that lay throughout the land.
All proceeds from the book, Miells on Wheels Around Australia, will go to the Royal Flying Doctor Service. Mrs Bristow-Miell said it was great to document a special journey and help a worthy cause at the same time.
"We've seen them (RFDS) in action,” she said.
"We've heard so many stories about the Royal Flying Doctor Service, people saying 'oh they saved my baby's life' or 'they saved my grandson's life'.
"The book is about our trip around the north, west and centre of Australia; our off the beaten track journey.”
Mrs Bristow-Miell has had publishing experience, having written a book on conservation in 1979 when "conservation was a dirty word”.
The pair and their unique caravan will also feature at the Jandowae Timbertown Festival parade on the weekend, hopefully raising more money.
"We've travelled through Cooktown and they'd say 'oh we saw you in Birdsville and recognised the van',” Mrs Bristow-Miell said.
"I reckon we can get $15,000 from the book but I've also got a tin people can donate to.
"The flying doctor has to raise $11 million for a new jet and then has to fit it out to become an intensive care plane.”
Miells on Wheels Around Australia is available at both the Jandowae Newsagency and Dalby Newsagency.
